Conquerers & Master Builders
Ancient Rome started to develop in what is modern day Italy as early as 800 BCE. The Romans were master builders who built an efficient network of roads. Their powerful armies traveled these roads to conquer many other people until Rome controlled all of the areas around the Mediterranean Sea. The victorious armies brought back treasures to make Rome the most beautiful and powerful city of its day. Full of monumental architecture, Rome was a real treasure. Roman houses were made more agreeable to live in by inventions such as indoor heating and plumbing. For entertainment, Romans could choose from a number of theatres or go to he Coliseum to see the gladiators fight. The Roman emperor was the most powerful ruler of his day. The Roman empire gradually lost power until it was run over by invading armies in around 500CE.
